Being fully present in the moment allows us to appreciate the here and now with all its exquisite details of joy.  The old saying about the past is gone, the future isn’t promised, but the now is a gift, that is why it is called the Present. 

The gifts one receives by being mindful include improved quality experiences of all the senses, lower heartrate and blood pressure, cognitive improvements especially with focus, reduced anxiety and stress, increased feelings of hopefulness and wellbeing, and feeling connected to self and universe.

It can all start with one breath.  Simply close your eyes and slowly, deliberately fill your lungs with a gentle inhalation, pause at the top for a moment then slowly breathe out for about twice as long as the inhale. Even one breath can bring you back to the present moment and return feelings of self-control.

Food tastes better, music is sweeter, flowers are more colorful, and staying fully engaged and present with a loved one can improve the quality of our relationships. But the most important relationship you will ever have is with yourself. Mindfulness is the highest level of self-care there is. To learn to like your own company and give your self the gift of the now.
